2011 Recap
Steve Crabtree
Executive Director
Thirty-seven years ago when this agency was formed, I am sure that Mrs. Gloria Hickson, our first Executive Director, did not expect the scope of our services to grow to be where we are today.
Thanks to the help of volunteers, staff, and the community we are able to proudly provide services to our seniors which might otherwise not be available without our existence. In 2011, we provided the following services to seniors throughout the county:
| Congregate Meals |
3,295 were served |
| Home Delivered Meals |
27,479 were delivered |
| Homemaker |
646 hours for cleaning service |
| Transportation |
6,102 one-way trips |
| Information and Referral |
764 calls |
| Outreach |
10 events reaching over 12,000 people |
| Commodities |
1,920 units to needy seniors |
It is reasonable to assume that as the senior population grows, so will the demand for our service.
The 2010 U.S. Census report quantifies the growth of the senior population as follows:
- More than 10,000 people will officially hit senior status each day of the New Year (2012).
- 15,000 Ohioans will become seniors each month.
- 1 in 8 adults in America is a senior.
- The U.S. population will add one new senior every 13 seconds this year.
- About 10,000 Boomers will turn 65 every day.
- This phenomenon will continue, every second and every day, for the next 18 years.
The senior population (65 and older) in 2030 is projected to be twice as large as in 2000, growing from 35 million to 72 million and representing nearly 20% of the total U.S. population.
The positioning of the agency for the eventual increase in the senior population and demand for services is an ongoing process. Our objective is to meet the ever-increasing demand by the proper utilization of resources such as people, facilities, vehicles, and finances. Meeting this objective will enable the agency to continue operation for at least the next 37 years, for which I am sure Mrs. Hickson would have been proud.
